Building back better after COVID-19: public health competencies for health workforce preparedness

Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic is raising new questions on public health competences and leadership workforce preparedness for global emergencies of this magnitude. This study aims to explore the demand opportunities innovation in competencies, which were caused by crisis. Methods We draw secondary sources critically review competency framework recently launched WHO ASPHER through lens COVID-19. Results WHO-ASPHER Competency Framework Public Health Workforce illustrates an interdisciplinary, inter-professional lifelong learning approach health. Five critical areas can be identified relation emergencies: (1) flexibility, adaptation, motivation, communication, (2) research, analytical sensitivity, ethics, diversity, (3) epidemiology, (4) (5) employability. However, may not enough. New models changes are needed, transform silos professions policy. Such transformations would include learning, working, leading governing differently must stretch far beyond workforce. Innovating stretches individual competence development. Moreover, it about resilience calls differently. Critical limited heath workforce, but become relevant all healthcare professions.
